Alex B Muhweezi

Policy reforms, Biodiversity planning, natural resources access and use conflicts. Alex B. Muhwezi leads Future Dialogues, a Ugandan think tank and consulting organisation focused on dialogue, policy, environment, climate, forests, and agriculture. In recent statements, he has called for massive tree planting, forest investment, the involvement of local governments, cultural leaders, and communities in forest protection, and the exploration of the financial viability of forest-based livelihoods, including timber and carbon trading. He has also critiqued forest encroachment, underscored climate-smart agriculture, and pushed for strategic options under REDD+ and community forestry. From this work, Muhwezi is likely to be deeply familiar with CBD goals related to ecosystems, biodiversity, conservation, sustainable use, and the role of forests in climate mitigation. He is also well-positioned to engage with the Nagoya Protocol / ABS frameworks, particularly where genetic resources (e.g., tree species, seedlings, indigenous plant varieties) and traditional knowledge are involved, especially in restoration, seed programs, and community forestry. His advocacy suggests awareness of how benefit-sharing could work, of communities rights, of biodiversity valuation, and of the policy/regulatory interfaces needed for ABS.
