Prima understands that Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing (ABS) is a crucial concept that ensures genetic resources are accessed and used fairly and equitably. This involves obtaining permission to access these resources, which includes prior informed consent from the provider country or indigenous and local communities. The benefits arising from the use of these resources are then shared fairly and equitably. In Uganda, ABS is essential for promoting sustainable development and protecting the rights of indigenous and local communities. The countrys rich biodiversity and traditional knowledge require protection and conservation. By applying ABS principles, Uganda can ensure that its genetic resources are used to benefit both the country and its people. This includes receiving fair compensation, technology transfer, and capacity building.
