Bwanika Joseph

Joseph Bwanika is an Assistant Commissioner at the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), where he provides leadership on agricultural policy and biodiversity management. His work intersects directly with CBD obligations, as agricultural biodiversity forms a core pillar of Ugandas resource base. He is well-versed in the provisions of the Nagoya Protocol, particularly regarding access, documentation, and sharing of benefits from livestock and crop genetic resources. Joseph has participated in stakeholder forums that harmonise agricultural research with ABS requirements, ensuring that farmers and breeders are recognised as resource custodians. His focus includes integrating ABS into agrarian extension services and raising awareness of PIC and MAT within farming communities. By aligning ABS with national agricultural priorities, Joseph helps ensure equitable benefit sharing, sustainable use of genetic resources, and compliance with Ugandas biodiversity commitments.
